Remove the oil cap and hold onto it for a few minutes. There will be two 10mm screws that hold down the left engine cover. You’ll need to remove this cover and set it to the side before replacing the oil cap. Now you’re ready to remove the coils on top of the spark plugs.
A single coil would provide the spark power for the entire engine (or sometimes two coils for larger "V" engines). The canister-style ignition coil remained in regular production use right up to the 1990s. In the early 1990s BMW switched from the canister-style ignition coil with spark plug wires to a "coil on plug" direct ignition system.

For me, the coils and plugs are independent of the valve cover gasket. For my non-turbo BMWs, I replace coils and plugs every 100k miles. For my turbo-equipped cars, I look at 60k mile intervals. This approach has kept me ahead of failures, as the car would be very uncomfortable to drive with a failed coil.
